Deputies Charge Penfield Man with the Murder of His Mother
On September 13, 2026, at 3:00 p.m., Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies were called to a residence on Ewald Drive in the Town of Penfield for the report of a burglary.
During the course of the investigation, deputies spoke with a neighbor, Joseph Petrella, who granted them access to his residence. Upon entering, deputies discovered a deceased woman inside. The victim is identified as Amy M. Hogan, Petrella’s 60-year-old mother.
Deputies quickly secured the scene and notified the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit, who took the lead on the investigation. MCSO Evidence technicians processed the scene, CIS conducted a search warrant, and a Crime Victim’s Advocate responded to assist the family.
As a result of the investigation, members of the Major Crimes Unit arrested Joseph A. Petrella, 39, of Penfield, and charged him with:
- Murder in the Second Degree (Class A1-Felony)
- Burglary in the Second Degree (Class C-Felony)
- Petit Larceny (Class A-Misdemeanor)
Mr. Petrella was arraigned in CAP Court and was remanded to the Monroe County Jail where he is held without bail.
