Multi-Agency Search Leads to Recovery of Missing Boater; Providing Closure for Family
On August 29, 2026, at 6:38 p.m., Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies were called for a boater who was missing in the lake approximately 1.5 miles offshore from the Charlotte Pier.
MCSO’s marine unit, Drone Response Team (DRT), along with partners from the United States Coast Guard, NYSP aviation, Rochester Police Department, Rochester Fire Department, Irondequoit Fire Department, and the West Webster Fire Department, assembled and initiated an extensive search effort. MCSO’s Underwater Search and Recovery Team (USRT) along with RPD’s SCUBA team continued efforts to locate the missing boater utilizing side-scan sonar until 2:30 a.m. The search was paused with a plan in place to resume in the morning.
The multi-agency search effort resumed and was joined with additional resources to include NYSP USRT. At approximately 5:15 p.m. on August 30, 2026, Michael Jones, 36, of Brighton, was located. USRT members continued their work and recovered Mr. Jones later in the same evening.
MCSO investigators are continuing their investigation into the events leading up to this incident. At this time, there is no evidence to suggest foul play as the investigation remains ongoing.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office extends its condolences to Mr. Jones’ family and loved ones during this difficult time.
