Nine Students Graduate as the First Class of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office SHIELD Program

On June 13, 2026, nine young men and women will celebrate as members of the first graduating class in the new MCSO SHIELD program: Sheriff’s Initiative for Education and Leadership Development.

The program began as a vision several years ago to help lift young people out of poverty and equip them with the tools needed for lasting success. One of our long-term goals of this program is the development of future deputies by preparing young people for the discipline, responsibility, and service this noble profession demands.

SHIELD was designed to provide students with personal growth opportunities they can carry with them as they enter the workforce and their communities. The concept is simple — a 12-week program developed to teach leadership, financial well-being, physical fitness, academics, and essential life skills to help young people succeed.

To accomplish this, students participated in leadership activities, community service projects, physical fitness challenges, team-building events, and mentorship opportunities with community partners.

Upon completion, graduates are encouraged to carry forward the lessons they learned by leading with integrity, serving their community, supporting their peers, and seeking every opportunity available to continue learning.

We are proud of these nine young individuals for their participation in this new initiative. We are also excited to announce that one of our graduates has successfully completed the T&E Civil Service Exam and is currently in the process for the position of Deputy Jailor.
