On Monday, November 7, 2022, a community member called Sheriff Baxter’s Office in response to a fatal motor vehicle accident in East Rochester on Saturday morning. The caller was concerned about seeing a deputy driving away from the area at the time and questioned the appropriateness of the deputy’s response and/or possible involvement.
During our preliminary investigation we determined a deputy was in fact in the area. Video obtained by MCSO today depicts a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed. Approximately ten seconds later, the video shows a Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle with its emergency lights activated moving in the same direction. Due to the uncertainty of what transpired, we paused our review and notified the New York State Attorney General’s Office. MCSO and the Attorney General’s Office will continue to conduct concurrent, independent investigations.
While these investigations are ongoing, the deputy was placed on administrative duty. The deputy’s name will not be released pending consultation with the AG’s Office. It is always the goal of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office to be as transparent with our community as possible.
We share the community’s sadness and concern regarding this tragic accident. We express our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased and continue to work with them through this difficult time.
