UPDATE: On December 12, 2024, Monroe County Sheriff’s investigators completed a thorough investigation and determined Dherise Dates was involved in additional crimes.

On July 31, 2024, at approximately 7:53 p.m., Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a residence on Five Mile Line Road for burglary report. The investigators gathered sufficient evidence to arrest Dates.

On October 7, 2024, Dates illegally entered the secure garage of an apartment complex in the Town of Penfield. Once inside, he damaged the victim's truck and stole several of his belongings. The damage to the truck was more than $4,400.

Dherise M. Dates, 18, of Rochester is charged with:

  • Criminal Mischief in the Second Degree (Class D-Felony)
  • Burglary in the Second Degree (Class C-Felony)
  • Burglary in the Third Degree (Class D-Felony)
  • Petit Larceny (Class A-Misdemeanor)
  • Attempted Petit Larceny (Class B-Misdemeanor)

On December 5, 2024, at approximately 4:28 p.m., the New York State Police, while assisting the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, attempted to take suspect Dherise M. Dates, age 18, of Rochester, NY, into custody. The suspect was entering a stolen vehicle, a 2018 Lincoln MKC, in the Greece Ridge Mall parking lot in Greece.

Law enforcement approached Dates as he entered the vehicle.  Dates attempted to escape from his parking spot. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle in the mall parking lot when Dates’ vehicle struck a State Police Investigator and a Monroe County Sheriff’s deputy, pinning them, and struck an unoccupied MCSO patrol car, and another unoccupied parked vehicle, while he was fleeing the scene. Dates failed to comply and a pursuit was initiated. Dates traversed multiple streets and eventually struck another vehicle, a 2011 Honda Accord, , at the intersection of Mt. Read Blvd and Maiden Lane. Dates then fled on foot and was apprehended by New York State Police shortly after that. We were assisted by Greece Police.

Dates is charged with Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 3rd (D Felony), two counts of Assault 2nd (D Felony), two counts of Reckless Endangerment 1st (D Felony), two counts of Criminal Mischief 2nd (D Felony), Obstruction of Governmental Administration 2nd (A Misdemeanor), Resisting Arrest (A Misdemeanor), and Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle 3rd (A Misdemeanor). Dates was transported to Greece Town Court for arraignment and was remanded to the Monroe County Jail on $75,000 cash bail, $150,000 bond.  

The investigator was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital to treat his injuries, where he was later released. The deputy was taken to Rochester General Hospital for treatment of his injuries, after which he was also released. The driver of the third vehicle was not injured.  

New York State Police Troop E Commander, Major Kevin Sucher, said, "The swift and coordinated efforts of the New York State Police and Monroe County Sheriff's Office were critical in apprehending a dangerous suspect. While we are relieved that all officers and civilians involved have sustained only minor injuries, this incident serves as a reminder of the risks law enforcement faces every day in their commitment to protecting our communities. We remain focused on the ongoing investigation and will continue to pursue justice."

"This incident is a stark reminder of the risk our deputies and officers face every day in the line of duty,” said Monroe County Sheriff Todd K. Baxter. “We are thankful that both our deputy and the State Police trooper received immediate medical attention, and we remain hopeful they will make a full recovery. We are also grateful the civilian involved was not injured. The investigation into this stolen vehicle and the circumstances surrounding the crash is ongoing and once again indicates the need for clean law around dangerousness and repeat offender standards. We are grateful for the swift response of all agencies involved and will continue to work together to bring the individual responsible to justice."

This is an ongoing investigation. More charges are pending related to additional criminal activity and will be released at a later date.
