At 1:40 in the afternoon on July 9, 2024, Monroe County Sheriff's deputies responded to the report of a recently stolen vehicle at the Speedway gas station at 995 Transit Way in the Town of Sweden. The stolen car was described as a gray 2005 Saturn Ion. On the way to the location, a deputy observed a car matching the description traveling east on State Route 531. With the aid of additional deputies, an attempt was made to conduct a traffic stop. The driver refused to stop and, in an attempt to avoid apprehension, steered the vehicle through the grassy median, proceeding eastward in the westbound lane of 531. The driver continued to exhibit reckless behavior by exiting 531, using the on-ramp for Manitou Road, then reversing direction and driving west in the westbound lane of 531. After driving into a field, the driver exited the car and ran toward a residential neighborhood. The deputies quickly caught up to him and took him into custody.
