At about 3:51 a.m. on May 22, 2025, Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a residence on Shagbark Way in the Town of Perinton for the report of a paranoid 83-year-old man with a rifle. Upon arrival, deputies learned the man was having a mental health crisis and his wife was in the house with him. Deputies established a perimeter and safely got his wife out of the house while continuing to attempt to make contact with the man.

From a second-story window, the man fired three rounds. Deputies took cover and activated a Hyper Reach to ensure the safety of the neighborhood and surrounding area. MCSO SWAT, K9, Hostage Negotiation Team and Drone Response Team responded to the scene. Several more attempts were made to contact the man in the house. As our SWAT team was approaching the house, the man exited his house and was detained. Thankfully, no one was injured and the man was transported to a local hospital for evaluation.

"Fortunately, the incident was resolved without injury through the use of proper tactics and protocols by our deputies," said Sheriff Todd K. Baxter. Prioritizing the well-being of others exemplifies the deputies' commitment to aiding individuals in distress.”

Deputies also canvassed the neighborhood to ensure none of the rounds struck neighbors or their property. Evidence Technicians processed the scene, and the investigation is ongoing through our Criminal Investigation Section.
