The lead security analyst for RG&E reports on 8/19/24 RG&E crews were inspecting substation #67. During the inspection, the crew discovered that someone had cut off multiple grounding cable wires from structures within the substation fenced area. The double gate on the southeast corner of the station's fence had also sustained damage, allowing access to the fenced-in area. Since the last inspection was conducted in July, the exact timeframe of the theft is unknown. He explained that someone cut the bolts to the metal clamps holding the chain-link fence up and then bent them back in to place. Even from a distance, the fence still appeared intact. Multiple metal structures are in place at the substation to support the electrical equipment that powers the grid. The estimated total is over 200 feet of grounding wire requires replacement, as the ground needs to be dug up at each location to splice the severed wires. It is estimated the wire is worth over $1000, but its street scrap value is less than half of that. There have been recent thefts or attempted thefts from other substations as well.
